Understanding
Baby Osteopathy

Newborn and baby checks form a large part of our work and many parents bring their babies in from a couple of days old to a few weeks or months old because they are unsettled or having difficulties.

Commonly babies are brought for osteopathy sessions after very quick or long births or an assisted delivery causing the baby to be unsettled or uncomfortable. Paediatric osteopathy can play an important part of relieving pain and discomfort and re-establishing the health in a baby.

We use the very gentle, safe and effective cranial osteopathy techniques on babies to help soothe and relax them.

Some of the reasons parents bring their babies to see us are:

  • Tension and inability to relax
  • Showing signs of digestive discomfort

Having over 30 years experience in Bedminster, many of the babies we see in our clinic come from personal recommendations by other parents. We also receive many referrals from professionals involved with infant care and have good working relations with midwives, health visitors and breastfeeding counsellors, for example, and working alongside lactation consultants to give postural advice related to breastfeeding issues.

Our Treatment Approach

Parents often wonder when osteopathy might help their child. Consider booking an assessment if you notice:

  • Assessing birth strains and tensions
  • Checking jaw and neck mobility for feeding
  • Evaluating overall symmetry and movement
  • Identifying any areas of discomfort
  • Supporting natural development
  • Promoting relaxation and comfort

Treatment uses very subtle techniques that respect your baby's comfort while encouraging their body's natural ability to release tension patterns.

Common Questions About
Baby Osteopathy

How soon after birth can my baby have treatment?
We can treat babies from just hours after birth. Many parents bring their babies within the first few days or weeks, especially if there are feeding difficulties or birth-related strains.
Is treatment safe for newborns?
Yes, our treatment is extremely safe and gentle. We use very subtle techniques specifically adapted for newborns and young babies, and all our osteopaths are highly trained in paediatric care.
Will the treatment hurt my baby?
No, treatment is very gentle. As quoted by one of our parents, "The treatment itself is incredibly gentle and my daughter really seems to enjoy it. She is a visibly more relaxed baby as a result."
How many sessions will my baby need?
This varies depending on your baby's needs. Some babies show improvement after just one or two sessions, while others might benefit from a short course of treatment. We'll discuss this after the initial assessment.
Can you help with feeding difficulties?
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons parents bring their babies to us. We can work with your feeding position and help release any tensions that might be affecting feeding comfort and efficiency.
