Holidays are great but the bed may be less so!
Many of us with a history of back, neck, hip or shoulder pain will eye new beds with suspicion. A few tips which may go some way to help you adapt to a different bed are:
– if the bed is too hard for you, or the springs too prominent, try putting a spare duvet, requested extra blankets, lined up pillows or even some folded bath towels under the bottom sheet;
– a pillow between your knees if side lying or 1-2 pillows under your knees if you sleep on your back;
– if the bed is worn or too soft and there is no option of another room, try pulling the mattress onto the floor;
– if you suffer from regular neck pain it might be worth taking your own pillow with you or buying an inflatable travel pillow as a back up (but try it at home first); or
– lastly, if the damage is done and you wake with a sore back or neck, which doesn’t resolve with movement, you can try wrapping a cold pack in a t-shirt/tea towel and putting it over the area (particularly the spine near that area) for a max of 10 minutes per hour. Allow the area to get back to room temperature after the cold pack so that you’re not asking the muscles to move when cold.
Have a lovely holiday and sleep well!
