Exercising In Heat

Feeling Hot Hot Hot but still wanting to keep fit? Follow these basic but essential tips!

So we appear to have a summer! Whilst it stays this glorious, those of you who like to get out and about and carry on exercising should be careful to take a few extra precautions;

– keep hydrated! Seems obvious but we always see more people with dehydration related headaches during this weather. If you start to feel thirsty you’re already dehydrated, you should be drinking regularly anyway in this heat (glass of water every couple of hours) but if you’re exercising you should be drinking every half hour at least.

– Replace salts; you will lose a lot of electrolytes in sweat at the moment when physically active, use sports drinks to replace these (or reward yourself for exercise with salty crisps!).

– Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun! Try and exercise in the mornings or evenings when it’s cooler.

– use sunscreen! Factor 15 at least. Sunburn will decrease your ability to control temperature and prematurely age your skin.

– if you can only get out for your run in the middle of the day, wear a hat!

– if you start to feel irritable, headachey or nauseous, stop exercise immediately and seek shade and fluids.

– If you do overdo it and get a sports injury then come and see us at the Courtyard osteopaths!

– have fun and enjoy the sun!
