Repetitive strain injuries are relatively common. They are due to damage to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) and/or nerves of our bodies causing symptoms such as pain, stiffness, swelling and decreased mobility.
Causes include repetitive movement, overuse, sustained or awkward positions, excessive vibration and mechanical compression. Sometimes there is a cumulative effect of causative factors causing symptoms after months or years of what was considered to be a fairly benign activity, such as desk based work causing neck and shoulder pain.
Tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and bursitis are all examples of repetitive strain injuries.
Osteopathic treatment can be effective in helping with many musculoskeletal tension conditions. Addressing posture, offering advice on how to alter aggravating or causative factors and providing exercises and at home management advice are just some of the ways that osteopathy may be of help.
